What is OVpay and How Do You Travel in the Netherlands?
What is OVpay and How Do You Travel in the Netherlands?
For over a decade, the “OV-chipkaart” was the only way to travel. However, in 2026, the system has fully transitioned to OVpay. This means you no longer necessarily need a separate plastic transport card to use the trains, trams, buses, or metros in Amsterdam and Amstelveen.
What is OVpay?
OVpay is the new national system that allows you to “tap in and tap out” using the devices you already carry.
- Debit/Credit Cards: Use your physical contactless card (Visa, Mastercard, etc.).
- Mobile Wallets: Use Apple Pay or Google Wallet on your phone or smartwatch.
- The New OV-pas: A digital or physical successor to the old chipkaart for those with monthly subscriptions or student discounts.
How Does It Work in Practice?
The process is identical to the old system, but without the “top-up” machines:
- Check-In: Tap your card/phone against the yellow reader at the station gate or on the bus/tram. Listen for a single beep.
- Check-Out: Tap the same card/phone at your destination. Listen for a double beep.
- Payment: The total cost of your day’s travel is bundled and debited from your bank account overnight as one transaction.
Should You Get a Personal “OV-pas”?
While you can use a bank card for basic travel, a Personal OV-pas (linked to your photo and BSN) is necessary if:
- You have a commuter subscription (e.g., NS Flex for 40% off trains).
- You are eligible for age-based discounts (children 4–11 or seniors 65+).
- You want to use the OV-fiets (the blue and yellow public rental bikes).
Important Tips for Expats
- The “Card Clash”: Do not tap your entire wallet. If you have a bank card and an OV-pas together, the reader may charge both or cause an error.
- The €20 Rule: For trains, you usually need at least €20 in your bank account (or on your pass) for the “boarding fee” to be authorized. For trams/buses, this is usually €4.
- Forget to Check Out? If you miss a check-out, you will be charged a “correction fee” (usually €20 for trains). You can fix this easily in the OVpay app to get a refund.
How Do You Prevent Bike Theft in the Netherlands?
With nearly 1 million bikes stolen annually in the Netherlands, “The Dutch Lock” is a skill every expat must master. In the Amsterdam/Amstelveen region, thieves are professional and fast—but they are also looking for the path of least resistance.
The Two-Lock Rule
Never use just one lock. A bike with one lock is an invitation; a bike with two is a deterrent.
- The Ring Lock (Ringslot): This is the permanent lock fixed to your frame that immobilizes the back wheel.
- The Chain Lock: A heavy-duty chain that you must wrap through the frame and the front wheel.
Look for the “ART” Certification
When buying a lock, look for the ART sticker. Dutch insurers usually require an ART-2 level lock for standard bikes and ART-3 or 4 for expensive e-bikes. If your bike is stolen and you can’t prove you had an ART-certified lock (and both keys), your insurance will not pay out.
Where and How to Park
- Attach to the “Fixed World”: Never just lock the bike to itself. Always loop your chain through a pole, a bridge, or a dedicated bike rack.
- The Height Trick: Keep your chain lock high off the ground. If a lock is lying on the pavement, a thief can use the ground as leverage for a bolt cutter.
- Guarded Parking (Stalling): In places like Amstelveen Stadshart or Amsterdam Centraal, use the “Bewaakte Fietsenstalling.” These are often free for the first 24 hours and are much safer than the street.
What to Do if Your Bike is Stolen
- Check the “Fietsdepot”: If you parked illegally (e.g., blocking a sidewalk), the municipality might have removed it. Check their online database first.
- File a Police Report: Do this online (aangifte). You will need your bike’s frame number (found under the pedal axle) and a photo.
- Insurance Claim: Submit your police report and your two original keys to your insurance provider.
