How Do I Register with a Dutch GP (Huisarts)?

You should register with a GP as soon as you have a permanent or semi-permanent address. Most doctors will only accept you if you live within a 15-minute radius of their practice to ensure they can reach you quickly in an emergency.

Step 1: Find a Practice in Your Area

Don’t wait until you are sick to look for a doctor. Use these tools to find one near your home:

• Zorgkaart Nederland: The most comprehensive database. Enter your postcode and filter by “Huisarts.”

• Kies uwhuisarts: A user-friendly map-based search tool.
• Pro Tip: Look for “Huisartsenpraktijk” (GP Practice) or “Gezondheidscentrum” (Health Center).

Step 2: Check for “Patiëntenstop”

Because of high demand, many practices in Amstelveen and Amsterdam-Zuid have a patiëntenstop (patient cap).

• Check the practice website first; it will usually state if they are Open or Gesloten for new registrations.
